WWHAT'S UP!? goes to Cleveland

Lizzie, KT and etta, took the Confronting Racism in Conversation workshop to the Case University Campus. We were hosted by The New Abolitionist Association, a growing Ohio student movement to fight mass incarceration AND our dear friends, Uma and Vilde, committed Cleveland fighters of justice.

Join us for our next Monthly Conversation Salon
Sunday 11am -2pm
November 18th
at Bricolage Theater  937 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 downtown

ok people- this ones a bit different. We will do our usual role play confronting racism in conversations practice but the last hour will be devoted to a theme.  This coming week the theme is:

Language – White Supremacy  - Racism. Do you use white supremacy and racism interchangeably? If you understand them to be different what do you understand the mainstream definition of Racism to be?

If you understand to your ability the violence, ignorance and hate associated with Racism and you believe Race is a construct does using the language of “race” reinforce oppression? Does the language we use perpetuate racism?

Ok. I gotta get the marbles outta my mouth after that but I’m really excited about this conversation. Many new people to town expressed interest in coming!

AND WE HAD OUR FIRST MEETING AT BRICOLAGE AND IT WAS A GREAT SPACE TO MEET! Cozy and warm with the most beautiful antique tile floor.

Please RSVP to me writealetta@gmail.com or michelle – sota5148@hotmail.com - 615-804-0064

THESE EVENTS ARE POTLUCKS! SO PLEASE BRING SOMETHING TO SHARE WITH AN INGREDIENTS LABEL!

For real, how many times a week does someone --friend, stranger, co-worker, boss, family member, neighbor, teammate, artist co-collective member say something racist to you? How hard is it to find appropriate words to confront these statements in a loving articulate totally kicking racism in the ass kind of way?

Well we are gonna practice talking!  Sounds small but these opportunities to shift consciousness happen everyday.

The content will include role playing (one. solid. hour.) and the building of tactics for confronting racism in different situations.  Feel free to bring or email role playing situations that you want to see discussed.  Each salon will go more in depth so every time will be different!

These Salons are open to everyone not just white people, although they are coordinated by white people with the intention of addressing white people. In the past there have been people of color in attendance and also assisted with planning help. At the last Salon we broke up into two different groups at the end - one for white people and one for people of color. This was suggested by POC and went really well. Please contact us if you want to know the demographics of people who have rsvp'ed if it would make you more likely to participate.
